There is that, but my main worry about this approach is that it will
likely require more maintenance to that piece of code.

I'd feel a lot more comfortable leaving the immediate error return in
place, and, should upstream refuse to fix the broken drivers, make
changes to the drivers ourselves so that they work, as we have done with
the radeon driver when facing upstream stubbornness.

IMHO such changes ought to be trivial in nature and easy to make and
automate, unlike the use of the asynchronous callback machinery.
