in pt_BR, guarda-chuva (= rain-guard) and sombrinha (= small shadow) are used to protect people from rain, and they're kind of gendered:
guarda-chuvas are usually black or dark-colored and for males, while sombrinhas are light-colored and for females.
larger versions to protect multiple people from the sun at beaches are often called guarda-sol (= sun-guard).
sombrinhas were historically used by ladies to protect from the sun while say talking a walk on the park, which is presumably how they got the name, that, like umbrella (root: umbro = shadow), refers to light rather than rain protection
